Linguistic Terrorism in the Mexican-American borders-language and terror?

Spanish is a language that is officially spoken in 21 countries, is a global language used in the UN, and is the language that has the most speakers in the world. Even the students in CSIA have shown the most interest in Spanish, as approximately 70% of 8th graders chose to take Spanish for their third language classes. No doubt, Spanish can be seen as one of the most international languages. However, Spanish speakers could not keep away from the discrimination against them.

Linguistic terrorism is, quickly put, the distinction between some methods of using language and those that are harmful or bad. It builds judgment and inequality between languages, and its example lies in the Mexican-American border.

Following the Mexican-American war (1848), Mexican-Americans lost most of their property and were left to face racism, violence, and disparity. ‘No Spanish Rules,’ one of the school regulations, is an example of unjust language policy, policies aiming to influence how people speak. These policies were mainly based on English-only ideology, the thinking that English is more important than other languages and, therefore, everyone should speak only English. Mexican Americans grew up in an environment where people refused to respect their identities and were taught that the language they speak is shameful.

However, another group is also tortured by linguistic terrorism. Chicano/Chicana refers to Americans of Mexican ancestry. They have developed their language out of the need to identify themselves as distinct people, a border tongue called Chicano Spanish. Chicanos have to deal with a different problem called the standard language ideology. It is the belief that the standard language variety is superior and the only appropriate language. Because of this, Chicanos face oppression to speak pure English or Spanish only. They are discriminated against and punished in public when using Spanish and are called deficient by standard Spanish speakers. Since they are demanded to do two opposite things from each side, Chicanos experience confusion in recognizing their identity.

Like this, many people face linguistic terrorism. It is a type of extreme discrimination, racism, and injustice. Terrorism is not only in the form of bombing and shooting but anything that destroys social peace and causes terror, like destroying people’s culture and identity.
