One of the unique curricula that CheongShim International Academy has is the ‘One player, one instrument’ program. This special lesson is designed to help students learn at least one instrument. There are classical instruments such as violins, cellos, flutes, and a few classes you can only see in CSIA, like the haegum, or even rock bands. Each semester, students get a chance to show off what they have learnt that year in a recital.
This semester, the recital was named CheongShim’s Harmony. It stood for two different things: harmony as in music, and grandmother in Korean. Thus, the poster and leaflets had pictures of grandmothers with cool instruments, playing the guitar. The whole recital was led by students, from the emcees to the staff. The show was held for two weeks, with performances lasting 2 hours a day.
On the first day, you could see the 3rd graders playing the drum, cello, violin, guitar, and haegeum. On the last day, they played the piano, flute, and the rock band performed on a fabulous stage. Since the drums were not easy to move, and it took a long time to get organized for the next stage, the students had fun listening and answering quizzes that the MCs gave. Everyone was eager to get the answer right, and they had no time to be bored while they waited.
Overall, the recital was a big success. Since this was the last recital for the 3rd graders, it was especially meaningful to them. Every student tried their best and did a marvelous job. With this experience, they could learn various skills, not just in music but in teamwork and perseverance as well. CSIA was filled with true harmony and melodies on this day.
