Have you ever used ChatGPT to help with a research assignment, Grammarly to improve your essay, or Khan Academy to learn a tricky geometry concept? These tools are all examples of Artificial Intelligence, or AI. The role of AI in the classroom has become more and more extensive, changing the way students learn and educators teach.
AI helps machines think and solve problems. Now, teachers and students are starting to use AI to make learning easier, faster, and more fun. Dr. Priyank Sharma, a teacher educator at the Indus Training & Research Institute, emphasizes that AI facilitates personalizing learning and administrative tasks. He notes that AI-driven tools can adapt to individual students’ learning paces, providing customized content and real-time feedback for differentiated instruction.
Some schools use AI to dissect different learning styles for personalized education. Students are joining in, utilizing AI to help fix grammar, explain difficult math problems, or quiz themselves before a big test. One popular tool is ChatGPT, which helps students brainstorm ideas, ask questions, and explore new topics.
But with great tools comes great responsibility. Schools are teaching students how to use AI in smart and honest ways. That means using AI to learn, and for education, not to cheat. It’s important for students to still think for themselves and not rely on AI for all the answers.
Dr. Sharma also expresses his concerns regarding challenges such as ensuring fairness in AI algorithms, maintaining the human element in teaching, and addressing data privacy concerns. He advocates for integrating AI literacy into teacher training programs to prepare educators for an AI-infused educational landscape.
CSIA students share Dr. Sharma’s statements, with seventh grader Jiun Maeng stating that “integrating AI into classrooms has a lot of potential, but it needs to be handled thoughtfully. AI should act as a tool, not a crutch. Clear guidelines and boundaries will help to define acceptable uses of AI.”
As AI becomes a bigger part of our world, learning how to use it the right way is a skill that will help students far beyond the classroom.
